Merdeka: What Does Freedom Really Mean for Our Children?

“Tanggal 31
Bulan lapan lima puluh tujuh
Merdeka! Merdeka!
Tetaplah Merdeka
Ia pasti menjadi sejarah.”
The late Sudirman sang it proudly. We sang it in school too. But as we celebrate Merdeka each year, have we paused to ask: What does Merdeka truly mean?
I asked my students. “What does Merdeka mean to you?”
They said, “Independence.”
So I asked again, “What is independence?”
Silence. They shook their heads.
Then I asked, “How does it feel when someone stops you from doing something you really want to do?”
They nodded instantly; “Yes, all the time!”
Yes, we’ve freed ourselves from colonial rule. But have we freed ourselves from self-doubt? From the rat race that tells us who to be, how to act, what to chase?
Merdeka Means More Than a Date Merdeka is unity. It’s about respecting differences and embracing diversity; a message we’ve heard for generations. But what about our children?
Each child is unique. Yet, society often pressures them to fit in, to follow the crowd, to silence their voice. True independence means giving our children the freedom to discover their strengths, to choose their own path, and to live up to their full potential.
This is what we strive for at Brainbow. Through Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), we help children build the emotional intelligence they need to navigate life with self-awareness, confidence, and compassion.
Merdeka Is Innovation. Merdeka Is Leadership.
When children understand themselves, they begin to question the norms, challenge old systems, and create new ideas.
They take initiative. They act with courage. They pursue excellence, not perfection.
These are not just leadership traits; they are essential life skills. And they begin with emotional literacy, creativity, and the freedom to try.
Have We Forgotten Our Smallest Heroes? This Merdeka, we salute our Frontliners. But let’s not forget the quiet strength of another group of heroes; our children.
During the pandemic, they pivoted from classrooms to screens. They faced isolation, inconsistent learning environments, endless homework, and minimal movement. They missed friends, routines, and play.
Yet they adapted. They kept going.
That’s not just coping. That’s resilience; a core of emotional intelligence.
At Brainbow, we build this resilience one neuron at a time. We don’t just help children bounce back; We teach them to Bounce Forward.
This Merdeka, Let’s Give Our Children a New Kind of Freedom
Let’s give them the freedom to feel.
The freedom to listen to their inner voice.
The freedom to express, to choose, to lead.
Let’s help them connect with themselves; before they connect with others.
Because that’s where true Merdeka begins.
